Dear Friends of "Dial Daily Bread,"
The poet asks, "And what is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days ..." Well, today (June 30) is our last one until another year.
We can also ask, "And what is so rare as a day of probation, a day for repentance, of new opportunity?" It's more precious than any of June's 30 beautiful days! Says Hebrews: "If you hear God's voice today, do not be stubborn, as your ancestors were when they rebelled against God" (3:15, Good News Bible). The King James Version says, "Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts." There is Good News here, and there is also a warning; in fact the warning IS Good News in itself.
Today you will hear His voice. Proverbs 8:1-9 personifies the Holy Spirit as crying out to us today. Here is the Peterson (The Message) paraphrase, and it's good: "Do you hear Lady Wisdom calling? Can you hear Madame Insight raising her voice? She's taken her stand at First and Main, at the busiest intersection. Right in the city square where the traffic is thickest, she shouts, 'You--I'm talking to all of you, everyone out here on the streets! Listen, you idiots--learn good sense! You blockheads--shape up! Don't miss a word of this--I'm telling you how to live well, ... truth-ready minds will see it at once." You may object that all the "traffic" drowns out the voice of the Holy Spirit; but no, Lady Wisdom knows how to shout louder. Don't forget that Light is stronger than darkness, and grace is stronger than sin, even all the world's sin, and so that Voice penetrates to your heart louder than all the racket the devil can make. Now--don't harden your heart. Listen; pause, ponder, receive, believe, and choose to say Yes.
But here is the warning: if you choose to say "No!" to that voice of love and pardon, Lady Wisdom will keep on with her shouting, but you will have atrophied the nerves of hearing in your soul. Don't blame God for being hard of hearing; it has to be your doing. But the Good News is that "today" you can hear that Voice one more time!
