Dear Friends of "Dial Daily Bread,"
Do you have to DO something, or GIVE something, or ACCOMPLISH something in order to receive the ministry of the Holy Spirit? Does God give everyone some sort of nod, some indication that He has noticed you? Or do only some elite of humanity qualify for His personal recognition?
It seems we are pretty well agreed that Christ died for everyone, for the world, that He has done something for "every man." Well, can I ask the next question: Does He likewise manifest Himself on a personal basis to "all men"? You say, "Yes, He gives everybody the Bible, let him read it!" True; but does the great God of heaven grant a more personal evidence that He notices you?
It seems that Jesus encourages us to believe that the answer is yes: "If I depart, I will send [the Comforter] unto you. And when He is come, He will convict the world of sin" (John 16:7, 8). Evidently He wants us to understand that the "you" is the world, not just the elite who have first accomplished some test of righteousness in order to qualify. Jesus says that the Holy Spirit makes a direct connection between God and every human being on earth--He gives that person the conviction of sin. That is personal evidence that God has noticed you as an individual.
You don't have to accomplish anything to merit this personal recognition. It's better than getting a real phone call from the President, for it is a personal "call" from Christ Himself. Acting as the true Vicar of Christ on earth, the Holy Spirit contacts "all men" with this conviction of sin. Suppose that the President is too busy to notice you: what the Holy Spirit is doing is like the President telling the Vice-president, "Pick up the phone and call so-and-so (you!) and give him some first-person recognition that I am thinking of him and I love him, and further, if he will listen to you, tell him that I want to appoint him to a post in my Cabinet, to sit with me in my Committee that is bringing an end to the great controversy with Satan." You take a deep breath?
Okay, read Revelation 3:21, and ponder its implications. You are somebody important! And it's not proud vanity to believe it. Accept that conviction of sin and let it bring you to your knees. Your "phone" is ringing. Answer it.
